Abstract

995,771. Control and switching systems. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. July 15, 1963 [July 17, 1962], No. 27338/62. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H3] The Specification describes a number of circuits for controlling the power supply to an A.C. load, the common feature of each circuit being a parallel arrangement of a saturable inductance and a controlled rectifier. In Fig. 1 these elements comprise a transformer 7 and a semi-conductor rectifier 5, this circuit acting as a switching system to supply or disconnect a load 8 according to whether the rectifier 5 is continuously non-conducting or conducting. The circuit acts as a regulating system by applying triggering pulses to the rectifier 5 at appropriate instants. When used as a switching system the current limiting inductance 3 is replaced by a capacitor, and rectifier 5 is controlled by a circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), in such a way as to avoid excessive peak currents at closure. Rectifier 5 may be connected across part or all of the secondary winding 6, and the primary winding 4 may be connected to the A.C. supply through a series-parallel arrangement of a capacitor and inductor, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), and may be centre-tapped. Fig. 5 (not shown). Other modifications mentioned are:- (1) Connecting the rectifier across part or all of a secondary winding separate from that supplying the load; (2) Combining the transformer and inductance in a single unit having a high leakage reactance, Fig. 6 (not shown); (3) Replacing the saturable transformer by a saturable inductor; (4) Connecting a current-limiting inductance in series with the rectifier to limit surges when using the circuit as a regulating system.
