Sausages D carried on a chain conveyer B beween aligning belts C are picked up by a second onveyer A (see Fig. 3) passing round sprockets 24 between aligning wheels 36 and guide rails 48, and are released in batches from the lower run of the conveyer A by mechanism E above a waiting box G supplied on an intermittently operated chain conveyer 172. An endless spring belt 40 prevents the sausages falling off the links 30 of the conveyer A as it passes round the sprockets 24. The mechanism E, Fig. 6, is formed by a horizontally reciprocable carriage including triangular plates, e.g. 102, driven on rollers 105a by a cam S, and a vertically reciprocable plate 108, movable with the carriage and operated by a cam U to push the sausages down into the box G. The carriage is joined to the rails 48 by slotted extensions 103. Before the sausages are pushed down by the plate 108 they are held by gates 104 on the carriage, which are pivoted by a cam T to release them. The box conveyer is operated through a double ratchet device, Figs. 7, 12 and 13 (not shown), one member of which is axially displaceable to move the conveyer 172 at each or alternate strokes of the plate 108 to receive either one or two layers of sausages in the box G.
