Abstract

995,152. Cutting by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. July 24, 1963 [May 1, 19621, No. 16655/62. Heading B3V. [Also in Division H5] An electric arc torch for cutting metal comprises insulating and metallic body portions 7, 10 of which the latter forms an arc chamber 4 and outlet nozzle 3, and the former encloses an assembly made up of a cylindrical copper member 6 fitting tightly around a gas supply pipe 13 and having a collar 8 which carries an electrode 5 and is surrounded by a ceramic insulator 9. Cutting gas is supplied through the pipe 13 and inert gas is supplied to the electrode bore 14 through conduits 18, 17, 15, and to the chamber 4 through conduits 19, the conduits 15, 19 being directed so that the inert gas forms a vortex flow stream and concentrates against the inner surface of the electrode 5 and the surfaces of the chamber 4 and the nozzle 3. Cooling water is supplied through channels 11, 20, and the pipe 13 may have an exit of Venturi form. A D.C. supply to a coil 21 causes the arc root to rotate around the tip of electrode 5, and the arc may be struck between this electrode and the workpiece 2, between members 5, 10, in which case the coil 21 may be omitted or not used, or between both of these pairs in which case appropriate resistors are inserted in the corresponding supply leads to produce the desired currents in the respective paths. Initiation and maintenance of the arc may be by means of a high frequency discharge and/or a pilot arc.
