Abstract
A process for the continuous nitration of aromatic compounds is characterized in that the reaction zone is composed of a multiplicity of compartments, the reaction mixture being kept in emulsion by agitation in each compartment, nitric-sulphuric acid mixture being charged in at least one compartment and part of the nitrated product which has been separated from spent acid in a zone at one end of the reactor is recycled to be combined with aromatic feedstock charged at the other end of the reactor. The process is applicable to the mononitration of benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, nitrobenzene and nitrotoluene. The invention comprises also an apparatus for effecting the process (see Division B1).
