Abstract

Ethyl benzene is separated from a mixture also containing m- and/or p-xylene by reacting the mixture with toluene and/or naphthalene to effect selective transalkylation forming ethyl toluene and/or ethyl naphthalene whilst the xylene(s) remain unchanged, distilling to separate off the xylene(s), and treating the residue with benzene to regenerate ethyl benzene by transalkylation. The product may then be separated by further distillation. If the starting mixture also contains o-xylene this may be separated by distillation prior to the selective transalkylation. If the xylene distillate after the first (selective) transalkylations contains both m- and p-xylene it may be subjected to a further selective transalkylation with an alkyl aromatic having a C3 or higher alkyl group (e.g. tert-butyl benzene) as described in Specification 1,108,178. Only the m-xylene reacts, and after separation of p-xylene by distillation, the m-xylene may be regenerated by transalkylation with excess benzene. Each transalkylation may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. AlCl3, AlCl3/HCl or H3PO4. The starting mixture may be any C8 aromatic fraction, e.g. one obtained from a reformate.
