994,986. Electric heaters. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. Oct. 17, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960], No. 37202/61. Heading H5H. An electric heater-unit of the metal clad type comprises a heating element 1 embedded in electrically-insulating material 7 having good thermal conductivity, e.g. magnesite, and coaxial cylindrical metal casings 2, 3 filled with electrically-insulating material 8, e.g. steatite or a mixture of steatite and quartz, in powdered, granular or moulded form, having a higher dielectric strength than material 7. Element 1 is connected to terminal pins 4, 5, pin 4 being electrically-connected to casing 2 whereas pin 5 is provided with a nut 20 for pressing an insulating bush 19 against a terminal clamping ring 18 which is attached to casing 2. Casing 3 is closed at one end by a moulded-steatite member 10 and a cap 12, and at the other end by a rubber plug 14 and a self-vulcanizing mass (not shown) adjacent material 8. Plug 14 is retained by an insulating sleeve 16 and disc springs 17. Alternatively, the uppermost ends of the casings may be closed by a plug of heat-resistant rubber or synthetic plastic material (not shown) which is retained by a flange on casing 3; and plug 14 may be replaced by a mass of selfvulcanizing rubber (not shown).
