Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel comprises at least one liquid or liquefied hydrocarbon of normal boiling point between - 200 DEG C. and 400 DEG C. containing an antimicrobial composition comprising a silver compound having a solubility in water of at least 0.01 parts per million and at least one mole per mole of said silver compound of an amine, phosphine or thiourea as a solubilizing agent. Hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon fuels mentioned include diesel fuels, kerosene, jet fuels, residual fuels, liquid C6- 17 alkanes, and liquefied methane, ethane, propane and butane. Silver compounds mentioned include silver carboxylates, which may contain halogen, hydroxyl, cyanate, oxy-alkyl and oxicane groups; silver sulphonates; silver dithioureas; silver sulphates or phosphates; and silver acetylides. Many types of amines are exemplified as the solubilizing agent.
