In the viscous clutch driving an enginecooling fan of Specification 898,442, the temperature-controlled valve-opening 116 through which liquid is fed from a storage chamber 82 to the operating chamber of the clutch is so shaped that as the bi-metal operated valveplate 114 moves over the opening 116 it covers its radially outer part first. The opening 116 may be as shown, or, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), in the form of two intersecting lines, one radial, one inclined, or in the form of a single inclined line, to provide stepped or gradual change of slip in the coupling.
