Abstract

In making chipboard from wood chips, straw, bagasse, hemp, sisal, or other cellulosic materials in comminuted form with lignin or its derivatives as bonding-agent, the cellulosic materials are throroughly mixed with the binder, the product is pressed and heated until preliminary setting occurs, removed from the press, and then heated again. The bonding-agent may be a sulphite liquor of pH about 3 and it is used in a proportion of 5-100, preferably 10-25, parts to 100 of cellulosic material. Hot pressing is carried out for about 30 minutes at 170-230 DEG C. and 5-50, preferably 15-25 kg./cm.2, pressing being effected between perforated plates to permit escape of gases. The second heating takes place at 180-230 DEG C. for 40-80, preferably 60-80 minutes, and may be carried out in an autoclave with a pressure up to 15 atmospheres.
