Abstract

992,877. Bearings. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. April 30, 1964 [May 7, 1963], No. 17908/63. Heading F2A. A thrust bearing comprises a ring 10 of ceramic material received in an annular recess 12 of rectangular section of a rubber &c. seating 11. Extensions 14 of the seating 11 embrace the ring 10 so that only its face 13 is exposed. The ring may be bonded in position. The thrust face 13 of the ring 10 is lapped flat to near optical standards. In a modification the sections through a ceramic ring 15 and the seating 17 are irregular, the ring 15 being chamfered at 16 so as to maintain a substantial thickness of material of the seating 17 adjacent the chamfer 16, and the seating 17 having its outer periphery 18 tapered axially and having a shallow rim 20 thereon. In further modifications one or more peripheral ribs may be formed on the seating 17.
