Abstract

992,628. Feeding webs. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Oct. 12, 1961 [Oct. 12, 1960], No. 34929/60. Heading B6B. Apparatus for accumulating continuous, moving, web material comprises two sets of bearing surfaces, one of which sets is movable relative to the other, and which sets are so arranged that continuous web may be passed along a continuous path around the bearing surfaces forming two, interleaved, spiral form portions. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a fluid bearing surface as described in Specification 970,871. Fig. 1 shows two sets of such fluid bearing surfaces, 1, 2, 3 . . . and 1a, 2a, 3a . . . , respectively, the bottom set of which is free to move, under gravity, towards and away from the upper set. The continuous web material is passed around the bearing surfaces, as shown in broken lines, along a path constituted by two interleaved, coplanar, spiral - form portions joined at the centre point of the path portion between surfaces 1 and 1a. The semi-circular fluid bearing surface can be replaced by a number of freely rotating rollers, as shown in Fig. 3. The two sets of bearing surface means can also take the form of freely rotating rollers, as shown in Fig. 4. Instead of rollers, in Fig. 4, quadrant-section fluid bearing surfaces may be employed. Guides may be employed to aleviate lateral movement of the web when moving through the apparatus.
