Abstract

992,620. Releasable pipe couplings. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Oct. 23, 1963 [Oct. 25, 1962; June 7, 1963], No. 41850/63. Heading F2G. A quick-release coupling, particularly for gas containers, comprises a first coupling part 24, Fig. 6, provided with a valve 53 kept in closed position by spring and/or gas pressure and a second coupling part 47, Fig. 4, provided with an axially movable valve-operating element 28 and an operating mechanism for moving said element, the coupling parts being provided with locking means comprising a recess 50 in one coupling part and an axially movable rod 40 in the other coupling part, said rod having the same cross-section as the recess, the rod and the recess being so arranged that coupling and uncoupling is possible only when the valveoperating element is in the withdrawn position and that opening of the valve is possible only when the coupling parts have been properly coupled. When the coupling parts are fitted together, radial lugs on the part 47 enters slots 27, 27a in the part 24 and the parts are relatively rotated, in the manner of a bayonet coupling, until the recess 50 in the coupling part 27 is opposite to the end of the rod 40 in the coupling part 47. The parts are then locked in the coupled position by raising the end of a lever 37 so that a forked arm 51 thereon ceases to hold up a collar 43 on the rod 40, the end of which is therefore pressed by a spring 42 into the recess 50. To open the valve in the coupling part 24, the end of the lever 37 is raised still further where another arm 39 thereon engages one limb of a spring 34, having two limbs as shown, causing the other limb to displace a deformable wall 33 which, through a disc 32, presses on the end of one arm of a bell crank 30, the other arm of which moves a valve operating element 28, against a spring 29, which moves the valve stem 54, in the coupling element 24, to valve-open position. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, the rod 71 is moved for locking and releasing the coupling by a lever 78, similarly to the embodiment described, but the valveoperating element 67 is moved to open the valve, when the end of the lever 78 is raised, through the tilting of a lever 83 by a cam surfaces 82 of the lever. In this embodiment a passage 66 and reliefs 68 allow gas to pass into the upper region 85 of the coupling pair 60 and to a reduction valve if desired. In a simpler embodiment. In Figs. 1 and 2 lugs 15, 15a, on the part 12 pass through slits 15, 15a in part 1 and the coupling is completed by rotating 12 through 90 degrees. Further rotation can be prevented by rotating a cam 21 which depresses an element 16 into engagement with a corresponding recess 6 in the part 1. Further rotation of the cam depresses element 16 sufficiently to open the valve 7.
