991,864. Separating loose material. PETTIBONE MULLIKEN CORPORATION. April 3, 1962, No. 12722/62. Heading B2H. Apparatus for separating loose material by sizes, e.g. gravel, includes a bed of parallel rollers 11 of elliptical cross-section, with adjacent rollers disposed 90 degrees out of phase, the rollers being driven with their tops moving towards the discharge end of the bed, and the rollers having elliptical ribs 14 which prevent jamming of the loose material between adjacent rollers, the spacing between adjacent ribs on a roller being slightly less than the spacing between two adjacent rollers. To prevent the loose material jamming between the rollers 11 and the side plates of the roller bed circular ribs 21 are provided near the ends of each roller. Circular ribs 22 are also provided in the planes of the side plates and these may extend out towards the ribs 21. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ribs 14 may be in the form of a spiral on each roller. The roller 11 at the discharge end of the bed is driven through a hub 26 and the other rollers are driven by chains (not shown) passing round sprockets 28, 30 fixed to the shafts carrying the rollers. The chain is supported at its upper and lower runs by guides, Fig. 4 (not shown), to prevent slack in the chain and consequent loss of phase between the rollers in the event of reversal of the direction of rotation of the rollers to clear a jam.
