Abstract
991,213. Grinding. J. A. CRABTREE & CO. Ltd. March 3, 1964 [March 7, 1963; Nov. 28, 1963], Nos. 9055/63 and 46978/63. Heading B3D. Metal surfaces are ground by a rotatable grinding-wheel or disc 1 having on its circumferential surface steps 1a of increased diameter for simultaneously removing thin layers from the workpiece during one traverse or pass of the wheel or disc. The grinding-wheel may be mounted on the electric motor-driven spindle of a surface grinding machine having a table for traversing the workpiece past the grinding wheel, the table also being movable transversely of the grinding wheel so that the grinding wheel removes layers from the workpiece. As described, the grinding wheel has three steps, the first and second steps removing layers 0.004 to 0.006 inch thick and the third step removing a layer 0.001 to 0.002 inch thick. The annular faces between the steps may be at right-angles to the axis of the disc for dry grinding or inclined or cut back to provide a space for coolant during wet grinding. The metal surface may be cylindrical and the grinding wheel rotated about an axis parallel to the workpiece and moved axially along the workpiece.
