Abstract
990,815. Rolling; altering physical properties. AEROPROJECTS Inc. July 17, 1961 [July 28, 1960], No. 25816/61. Headings B3M and B3V. The rolls of a mill are vibrated in an axial direction at such a frequency and energy level that the grain size of the metal to be rolled is reduced. Rolls 12 and 14 have exponentially shaped portions 52 and are supported by backing discs 16 and backing rolls 26, the rolls 26 bearing on flanges 16a of the discs to prevent transmission of vibration. Magneto-strictive transducers are attached to each end of both rolls and are supplied through slip-rings 98, sleeves 68 being so dimensioned that a node is formed at 78 to isolate the frame of the rolls from vibrations. The vibration generator can be an electrostrictive or piezoelectric transducer or can be mechanical, electromagnetic or hydraulic. Specification 837,279 is referred to.
