Abstract

1,255,914. Shafts. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP. 22 Jan., 1970, No. 3140/70. Heading F2U. Torsional vibrations in a drive shaft are reduced by damping material, such as swelled mica mixed with epoxide resin, inserted in gaps in the shaft located at the regions of the nodes or of reduced shaft diameter. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the damping material 11 is inserted in longitudinal grooves 21 in the surface of the shaft, while in Fig. 7 cylindrical shell plates 35 of irregular shape are secured to the shaft and the damping material 14 inserted in the gaps between the plates. In other arrangements (not shown) the damping material is inserted between pins, discs or other projections on the shaft surface (Figs. 5 and 9), or a layer of the damping material on sheet metal is wound spirally around the shaft (Figs. 11 and 12).
