Abstract
A polyamide resin has uniformly blended therein as a separate phase at least 1% by weight of a poly(alkylene ether) glycol having 2 or 3 carbon atoms in the alkylene group or groups and a molecular weight of at least 600. In a example, a 48% aqueous solution of hexamethylene diammonium adipate is polymerized in an autoclave in presence of 0.3 % mol. (based on the adipate salt) of a 25% aqueous acetic acid solution and sufficient aqueous solution of polyethylene ether glycol to provide 15% by weight of glycol based on the weight of polyhexamethylene adipamide. The compositions are spun into filaments (see Division B5). Specifications 576,647, 639,893, 902,905 and 902,907 are referred to.ALSO:Yarn, tow, floc, staple, cord or fabric having antistatic properties is comprised of oriented, melt-spun filaments or fibres of poly amide, e.g. nylon having distributed therein elongated particles (0.05-0.7 m dia. x more than 3m length) of a poly(alkylene ether) glycol having 2 or 3 carbon atoms in the alkylene group or groups and a molecular weight at least 600. The polyamide filaments or fibres have an N.M.R. peak ratio of at least 1.5 and contain at least 1% of the poly (alkylene ether) glycol. The filaments or fibres, before or after making up into a yarn or fabric, may be scoured or extracted with hot water so that a proportion of the poly (alkylene ether) glycol is removed and voids are formed in the filaments. This increase the covering ability and soil-hiding properties of the yarns or fabrics. The antistatic filaments may be used alone or in conjunction with other filaments to form mixed yarns e.g. 10% units static nylon filaments with 90% normal nylon filaments. The filaments may be heat-set, twisted or crimped and may be formed into any type of knitted, woven or felted fabric. In an example, drawn filaments spun from nylon 66 containing 15% of polyethylene glycol are woven into a fabric which is scoured in boiling water for 1 hour. The scoured fabrics contain 2-8% polyethylene glycol and the fibres contain elongated voids of circular cross-section. Specifications 576,647, 639,893, 902,905 and 902,907 are referred to.
