Abstract

990,624. Valves. VACUUM RESEARCH (CAMBRIDGE) Ltd. Dec. 6, 1961 [Sept. 6, 1960], No. 30683/60. Heading F2V. A valve comprises a body having inlet and outlet openings 13, 14 and a valve closure disc 20 co-operating with a seat surrounding one of the openings, this disc being movable, transversely of the flow path between inlet and outlet, to open and close the valve, and movable axially of the seat to effect sealing. The disc is carried by a shaft 15 which is rotatable through rack-and-pinion 22, 23 by an air motor, not shown, the shaft being movable axially by another air motor 19. The edge of the disc at one or more places is engaged by an arm 28 carried on a stem 27 which is also movable by an air motor 25 in a direction parallel to the shaft 15 to urge the disc evenly against its seat in closed position. The disc is water-cooled through a passage in the shaft 15 which connects with a cooling pipe 30 fixed to the disc, the disc additionally carries, on opposite sides, finned heat radiation devices 31, 32 to assist cooling. In a modification, disc 20 is pivotally carried on an arm pivoted in turn to the shaft 15 which in this case is not axially movable, sealing closure being effected by a member bearing on the free end of the arm or directly on the disc and urged thereagainst by an air motor. The shaft 15 and stem 27 are sealed by bellows 33, 36 and glands 34, 37. These glands are provided with test connections 38, 39. It is stated the interior may be protected by a bellows secured at one end to plate 10 round opening 13, the other end engaging a top surface of disc 20 when the valve is closed and engaging plate 11 round opening 14 when the valve is open.
