Abstract
903,669. Valves. WILLIAMS, J, L. Feb. 24, 1959, No. 6392/59. Class 135. A gate valve comprises a valve housing suitably formed of welded plates to form a rectangular valve seat cavity 17, to which access may be had on removal of a plate member 39. The housing has coaxial inlet and outlet ports 9, 11 terminating at the cavity. Two separate rectangular valve seat members 51 are mounted in the cavity through the access opening and have inner elastomer beads which sealingly engage a reciprocable blade closure member 57 or sealing contact each other when the valve is open. The seat members are also provided with outer elastomer portions which sealingly engage the inlet and outlet ports 9, 11. The combined thickness of the two seat members is slightly greater than the thickness of the cavity 17. The seat members may be removed on removal of the plate 39 by actuation of the blade 57 from the valve open position, which pushes the seat members through the opening. The blade is sealed by packing 89, pressed between a plate 67 and a rectangular packing gland 93 by pivoted bolts 97 which, when loosened, allow the plate 67, gland 93 and packing 89 to be moved slightly relative to the cavity so that the gate blade 57 may be centred relatively to the seats. The cavity is provided with several tappings such as 47 for draining any leakage between the valve seat members.
