990,002. Coaxial cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. March 1, 1963, No. 8316/63. Heading H1A. A coaxial cable has the inner conductor supported by electric insulation bonded to the outer conductor. In Fig. 1, cellular polythene insulating cylinders 2 have a radial slit 4 in which the central conductor is supported. Around them is folded an outer conductor 3 provided with a polythene coating 5. The outer conductor is then heated to weld the cylinders to the polythene coating. Cylinders 2 may be replaced by solid or cellular polythene discs. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, pads of polythene 10 are bonded to the polythene coating 9 and then folded round the inner conductor. Strips of polythene at an angle to the cable axis may replace the pads so that, when they are folded, they provide a continuous helix. The supporting material may be bonded directly to the outer conductor by an adhesive layer.
