Abstract

989,701. Safety catch gear. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 9, 1964 [April 18, 1963], No. 15311/63. Heading B8L. A device for connecting nuclear fuel elements to a lifting means in a metal lined shaft C in or leading to a nuclear reactor core is provided with links 5 having arcuate flanges 6 which are adapted to be spring-urged outwardly to grip the wall of the shaft on accidental release of the device from the lifting means. As shown, a housing 1 supporting the fuel elements is connected to a collar 11 by the links 5 and is supported by a compression spring 7 mounted on a flange 2 of a member 3 secured to the collar 11. The collar 11 is connected to the lifting means by a collet 4 such as that described in Specification 909,646. On release of the device from the lifting means, the spring 7 causes relative movement between the housing 1 and the collar 11 thereby pivoting the links 5 outwardly to engage the flanges 6 with the wall of the shaft. A screwed plug 31 in the housing 1 is adjustable by a boss 32 and provides a stop to limit the travel of the member 3 and thereby to limit the angular movement of the links 5.
