Abstract

1,001,534. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, LONDON. July 29, 1964 [Aug. 1, 1963], No. 30543/63. Heading G6C. An elongate fuel element has a sheath including groups of antibowing lugs, each group being equispaced circumferentially; at least one of the lugs of a group at the end of the sheath has a radially extensible member capable of being reduced in effective radial extent against the action of resilient means tending to extend it. The end lug 5a has a recess containing a spring 11 which bears against an arm 8 pivoted at 9. Extension is limited by a pin 12 carried on the arm 8 fouling a slot 13 in the lug. The fuel element is loaded by a grapple which holds the arm 8 in a withdrawn position until the fuel element is released in its required position in a fuel channel 3; thus the arm 8 and opposite lug 5c bear forcibly against the channel wall 2, to prevent coolant flow induced vibration of the fuel element.
