Abstract

A plastic wood composition is produced by mixing a cork-rich coniferous bark fraction and a thermoplastic resin, heating the mixture until it becomes plastic, and cooling and grinding it. The bark fraction may be produced from the bark of Douglas fir, Western hemlock or White fir by comminution and mechanical separation. The bark fraction may comprise 63-73% of cork. 95% of the bark fraction may pass through a 65 mesh screen and 65% through a 200 mesh screen. The resin may be a synthetic p-pinene polymer, an extracted pinewood pitch resin, or a calcium-treated, esterified, or hydrogenated rosin. The composition may also comprise a plasticizer, e.g. distilled tall oil or a mixture of fatty acids derived from tall oil. The composition may comprise 45-65% of bark fraction and 5-8% of plasticizer.
