Abstract

988,569. Filters; gravity-separation apparatus. J. G. CROFT. Nov. 2, 1961 [Sept. 22, 1960], No. 32676/60. Heading BID. A water trap for use in filtering petrol comprises an inlet 2, outlet 3, a bowl 8, a filter element 15 of, e.g., fine crimped non-corroding gauze, forming a multi-layer screen adapted to separate out any water from the fuel, and a synthetic plastic, e.g. polythene, outlet control valve 19, in the form of a float, adapted to open and close the annular mouth 4 of the fuel outlet. The valve has a specific gravity between those of the fuel and water, so that it rises and closes the fuel outlet as the water accumulates.
