[Also in Divisions B8, F1 and G1] A liquid sampling apparatus comprises a chamber 2 into which liquid is induced from a stream 7 via pipe 1 by application of suction to a pipe 3, and a U-tube containing liquid which forms a barometric seal. One branch 4 of the U-tube protrudes into the chamber and the other branch 5 has a liquid outlet 6 which in use is at a lower level than the chamber. Suction applied to the pipe 3 also causes liquid forming the seal to move towards the chamber 2. When the level in stream 7 is at its minimum the suction will be sufficient to raise liquid from the stream to a level slightly above rim 8, and to raise liquid forming the seal to the rim 8. When the level in stream 7 is above the minimum liquid from the stream will, upon application of suction, flow into the branch 4 of the U-tube from the chamber 2 until the level of liquid in the branch 5 is equal to that of the stream. Air is then admitted to the pipe 3 at such a rate that the level in the branch 5 will not rise until the liquid level in the chamber drops to the level of the rim 8. A quantity of liquid will subsequently pass through the outlet 6. The quantity dispensed through the outlet will be directly proportional to the liquid level in the channel 9. As illustrated weir 10 is so shaped that the flow rate of the liquid is directly proportional to its level and thus to the amount dispensed through the outlet in one operation. The apparatus may recycle automatically by using a timer controlling the opening and closing of valves in suction and vent lines connected to the pipe 3.
