Abstract

987,013. Melt spinning polyesters. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 24, 1963 [June 5, 1962], No. 21693/62. Heading B5B. Polyesters are melt extruded in the form of filaments and the solidified filaments are then wound up, the only molecular orientation imparted to the filaments being that produced by winding up. A small extension of the spun filaments by cold drawing not exceeding 50% of their spun length may additionally be applied to the filaments after they have been collected. The polyesters are of a glycol and a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid or copolyesters of a glycol and said acid with a minor proportion of a second aromatic discarboxylic acid or of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. Alternatively the second acid may be a hydroxy aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid. The naphthalene dicarboxylic acid may be one in which the carboxyl groups are not ortho or peri to each other, e.g. naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid. The minor acid component of the copolyester may be terephthalic acid. The glycol may be aromatic, alicyclic or aliphatic glycol, e.g. ethylene glycol or tetramethylene glycol. The winding up of the extruded filaments may be conducted at a linear speed not exceeding 9000 ft. per minute.
