When the control knob 68 of a mixing valve is turned from the " off " to the " cold " position the lift valve 42 and a slide valve 22 are elevated by a spring 23, however, the hot water ports 30 remain closed and cold water ports 32 open. The interior of the valve 22 leads to a mixing chamber 36 that is open via the valve 42 to a chamber 60 having one or two outlets, not shown. As the knob 68 is further rotated towards the " hot " position, the lift valve 42 opens to a greater extent and the valve 22 increasingly uncovers ports 32 and covers port 30 until in the " hot " position no cold water at all enters the mixing chamber. Throughout the range of movement of the knob between " cold " and " hot " a thermally responsive bellows 38 in the mixing chamber compensates for any temperature variation by moving the valve 22. The bellows acts as the interconnecting means between the two valves. The liquid temperature for any setting of the knob may be varied by adjusting an abutment 40 for the slide valve. The interior of the slide valve 22 is connected with a space therebeneath via a restriction 29. The bellows which has interior means for limiting its contraction, closes the hot water ports upon failure of the cold water supply.
