Abstract
986,484. Forcing liquid by gaseous pressure. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. March 21, 1961 [March 21, 1960], No. 10190/61. Heading F1R. Apparatus for providing a slow, uniform flow of liquid by displacement with a gas under pressure comprises a container 34 having a gas inlet 25 and a liquid outlet 18, the gas inlet being provided with a constriction 30 which has an impedance to gas flow providing a flow rate of approximately 0À03 to 0À2 ml/min for 1 p.s.i. drop across said impedance, so that the liquid flow rate is substantially independent of changes in impedance in the outlet and in the viscosity of the liquid. The construction 30 may comprise a palladium wire sealed in a capillary tube, a pinched metal tube, a fine glass capillary or a narrow tube packed with powder. The inlet and outlet conduits are of capillary tubing and a pressure regulator 27 and a pressure gauge 31 are provided in the inlet conduit. The apparatus is described in combination with a burner for use in flame photometry.
