Abstract

Azo pigments of improved flowability are prepared by treating an azo pigment in aqueous suspension or in an aqueous paste, during or after manufacture at an elevated temperature, with a water-insoluble organic solvent in a proportion of 1/50 to a hundred times the weight of azo pigment and filtering, washing and drying the pigment so obtained. The process may be carried out in the presence of an emulsifier and preferably at 40 DEG to 100 DEG C. Specified solvents are benzene, toluene, xylenes, chloro- or bromo-benzene, di- or tri-chlorobenzenes, nitrobenzene, chloronaphthalene, quinoline, acetonitrile, methylchloroform, benzyl cyanide or a benzoic acid alkyl ester. In examples: (1) chlorobenzene is added to an aqueous suspension of the disazo dye from tetrazolized 3,31-dichlorobenzidine and 1-acetoacetylamino-2-methoxybenzene (2 mols.) which is then heated to 95 DEG C. by passing in steam, the dye filtered off, washed and dried; (4) an aqueous emulsion of chlorobenzene and a resin soap is added to an aqueous suspension of acetoacetanilide which is then coupled with tetrazodized 3,31-dichlorobenzidine and the whole mixture containing the resultant disazo dye heated to 60-70 DEG C. for 1 hour then filtered off, washed and dried. The treatment of other mono- and dis-azo dye pigments is described in examples.
