Abstract

986,110. Fluidized bed reactor/cooler. COAL TAR RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 28, 1961 [Dec. 29, 1959], No. 44070/59. Heading B1F. [Also in Division F4] Hot gaseous reaction products, e.g. phthalic anhydride produced in the catalytic reaction bed 7 described in Specification 866,419, is cooled by fluidizing a bed 5 containing cooling pipes before entering the condenser through duct 10. As shown, bed 5 is superimposed on catalyst bed 7 in vessel 1 and is separated therefrom by a panel 6 having apertures through which pass the pipes 4 supplying oxidizing gas to the reaction bed, the product gas from which passes into bed 5 through the clearance between pipes 4 and the apertures. Bed 5 is cooled by the upper parts of pipes 4 and by a cooling coil 9. The material in bed 5 can be continuously or intermittently replaced through outlet and inlet 11, 12.
