Abstract

In exothermic or endothermic catalytic reactions, e.g synthesis of hydro-carbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, employing the fluidized technique, an entrained suspension of the catalyst in the reactants is first <PICT:0647697/III/1> <PICT:0647697/III/2> passed through a high velocity zone in indirect heat exchange with a heat exchange fluid and then passed into a superimposed low-velocity zone wherein a dense fluidized bed is maintained, the catalyst particles being continuously recycled to the high-velocity zone. The high- and low-velocity zones comprise superimposed sections 3, 5, Fig. 1, of a reactor 1, the low-velocity zone 5 having a larger diameter and the high-velocity zone containing heat-exchange tubes 7. Catalyst is recycled to zone 3 through standpipe 17 under the control of damper 21, and inert or recycle gas is introduced at 19 to aerate and/or strip the catalyst. In a modification, Fig. 2, suitable for processes wherein recycle of unreacted gases and/or reaction products is desired, the recycle stream enters zone 3 at 9 and fresh reactants enter zone 5 at 10. A distributing grid 13 is also supplied and the stand-pipe 17 is positioned internally. Specification 634,534 is referred to.
