A boat hull comprises a main hull element 1 having a transom 13 and tapered bow 10 which on its own can be used as a motor boat hull, and an auxiliary hull element 2 also having a transom 25 and a tapered bow 24 adapted to be secured to the main hull element, transom to transom, to form a sailing boat hull, and wherein the main hull 1 contains a load, e.g. ballast, capable of being moved from a first position which the load occupies when the main hull element is used on its own to give the element a location of centre of gravity suitable for a motor boat, to a second position which the load occupies when the auxiliary hull element 2 is added to the hull element 1 to give the resulting hull a location of centre of gravity suitable for a sailing boat, the load also being capable of being moved from the second position to the first position when the auxiliary hull element is removed from the main hull element. In the embodiment shown the hulls are formed of marine plywood, the element 1 comprising ribs 11 and 12, and internal strokes 15, a transom 13, 14 providing support for an outboard motor. The element 2 comprises a middle rib 26 surrounding a lower mast step 27 and a centre board well 28. The hull elements can be connected together by, e.g., brass bolts, eccentrics, straps or knuckle bolts. The hulls can also be made of metal alloy, waterproof canvas, reinforced plastic, or watertight inflatable covers.
