Abstract

985,909. Runway lamps. CORNING GLASS WORKS. May 8, 1963 [May 15, 1962], No. 18236/63. Heading F4R. A luminaire for directing light through a range of low angles of elevation above a substantially horizontal surface, e.g. a runway, and throughout a range of horizontal angles, comprises a lens 13 having its top edge 14 disposed slightly above the horizontal surface and a light source 12, the lens having an emergent surface 11, which is convex in both horizontal and vertical cross-section, and an incident surface 10 which is convex in vertical section and has horizontal sections in the form of curves which are convex in a central area and concave on both sides thereof, the lens spreading light from the source 12 through vertical angles above the horizontal surface varying from a maximum a (Fig. 3) for light emitted near the bottom of the surface 11 to a minimum b for light emitted near the top thereof. The lens 13 is fitted in a housing 18 in an aircraft runway to give aircraft an indication of the position of the runway. The surface 11 of the lens 13 is an arc of a circle in horizontal cross-section and in vertical crosssection the curvature increases towards the bottom edge. The surface 10 is an arc of a circle in vertical cross-section and flutes 17 are provided near the bottom of the edge to produce nearly constant candle-powers in horizontal planes at higher vertical angles. With suitable variations the lens 13 may be reversed and a reflector may be situated behind the source 12.
