[Also in Division B7] A spoiler mechanism for aircraft or missiles capable of travelling at supersonic speeds comprises a surface 16 disposed perpendicularly to an aerodynamic surface 15 and spaced therefrom so that a pressure wedge is unable to build up immediately in front of the mechanism and thus the shock wave 18 is vertical. The spacer is spaced from the trailing edge of the aerodynamic surface by a distance equal to the depth of the high pressure zone behind the spoiler, caused by the shock wave. The width of the gap 17 may vary between the width of the spoiler and three times this width. The spoiler may be retractable into the aerodynamic surface. Channels may be provided and extend from the zone forward of the spoiler to a zone rearward to prevent pressure build-up forward. Fig. 4 shows spoilers 26, 27 retractively mounted in the nose 30 of a missile and arranged adjacent surfaces 31.
