Abstract

983,903. Packaging machines. KOUSEN FABRIEKEN HIN N.V. March 26, 1963 [Oct. 8, 1962; Jan. 7, 1963], No. 11862/63. Heading B8C. Supporting, opening and filling bags.- Articles are delivered into an open-mouthed 155 bag by a pusher 65 (Fig. 2) whose working stroke is momentarily arrested by a latch when the article is substantially completely inserted in the bag and is subsequently released to thrust the filled bag away from the filling location. The pusher 65 is resiliently mounted on a carriage 66 and the latch 71 may either arrest the lever 68 driving the carriage or may arrest the spring-mounted pusher itself, allowing the lever 68 to perform an uninterrupted stroke under the action of a spring 70. The bag is held open by a pair of spring-biased funnel-shaped elements 83 (Fig. 1) which pivot into its mouth and when it is opened by a resilient pressure finger 77 (Fig. 2) and a blast of air from a nozzle 82 and are positively retracted before the filled bag is ejected. The open bag is the topmost one of a pile 72 resting on a tray upwardly biased by a spring arm 86 so that flap-forming extensions 120 (Fig. 4, not shown) on the lower walls of the bag are pressed against a ledge 85a. The arm 86 may be positively lowered when the filled bag is pushed away from the tray, its end edge having been brought horizontally above a Z-shaped ledge 74 by the stiffening effect of the inserted article which may be a pair of stockings folded about a sheet of paper. Operation of the bagopening mechanism is initiated when a microswitch 98 is operated by the passage of a pair of stockings. In an alternative arrangement the tray supporting the bags has vertical pins 102 (Fig. 6) pressing upwardly through registering holes in the bags which are pushed upwardly by the tray against arms 109 swung inwardly about their shafts 110 from the position of Fig. 6 to overlie the bags. After the uppermost bag has been opened the bag-supporting tray and its pins 102 are lowered sufficiently to permit the stockings to be pushed into the bag, and the abutment arms 109 are swung about the shafts 110 to the position shown in Fig. 6 so that pins 112 rigid with them move beneath the filled bag to raise its closed end from the pile. In this construction presser members 115 are moved downwardly to clamp the opened bag against the funnel-shaped arms 83 after these have been pivoted into position to hold the bag open. The bag-supporting tray may be removed from the machine to receive a fresh charge of bags. Closing, sealing and labelling bags.-As the bags are carried between conveying belts 88, 89 (Fig. 1) flaps on them are closed by a fixed plough 92. The flap may then be heat-sealed, or may be closed by a label applied from a roll 94. The labelling device is controlled by a photo-cell detecting the leading edge of the bag and by a second photo-cell detecting the presence of a label ready for attachment to the bag. A warning is given if no label is available for attachment.
