694,699. Packaging machines. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK-AKT.-GES, F. Oct. 26, 1951 [Oct. 30, 1950], No. 25126/51. Class 94(i) A machine for opening flatly-collapsed bags and for filling the same includes apparatus comprising an intermittently movable feed wheel against the outer face of which a bag, withdrawn by an oscillatable plate from a magazine of such bags in collapsed condition, is applied, and co-operating mechanical spreader and suction devices automatically operable at the bag-receiving station of the wheel to open the bag for subsequent filling. A flattened bag 2 in a magazine 1 is engaged, between its folded-up bottom and its side wall, by an oscillated plate 3 which carries the bag down against a flat wall 4a on a temporarily stationary intermittently rotated wheel 4. Here the bottom of the bag is engaged by a pivoted suction member 8 and the mouth of the bag by opposed suction members 5, 6 which, in conjunction with the wall 4a and an abutment 4b thereabove on the wheel, partially open the bag. A spreader device, comprising a hooked arm 7 pivotally carried by the wheel 4 and a hooked arm 7a slidably mounted in the arm 7 to move radially of the wheel, is then moved down into the mouth of the bag and the arms 7, 7a moved apart to complete the opening of the bag in conjunction with the suction member. Suction to the suction members is then cut off and the wheel 4 moved one step so that the bag now carried by the arms 7, 7a is positioned under a filling means 10, the bottom of the bag resting on a plate 9 which may be jigged up and down to consolidate the contents of the bag. The wheel is then moved another step to carry the filled bag above an endless conveyer, having pockets 11 and one of its guide wheels coaxial with the wheel 4. The spreader arms 7, 7a release the bag to drop it into a pocket 11 of the conveyer which carries it to closing means.
