Abstract

983,246. Electrically operated cartridges and smallarms therefor. L. J. PHELPS, and A. MARSHALL. June 13, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 9026/61. Headings F3A and F3C. An electrically operated cartridge comprises a case 1 of insulating material such as plastics, a bullet 2 and an ignition system which comprises a pin 6 with head 5 and a filament 7 which connects the pin to the bullet 2. The cartridge, which contains a propellent charge 3 and rust inhibitor 4, is fired by applying an electrical potential between the head 5 and the bullet 2. Ignition may be assisted by coating the filament 7 with a detonating substance. In a second embodiment the filament is connected to a conductive coating formed on the inner surface of the case and in a third embodiment the filament is dispensed with and the propellant is composed of an electrically conductive material or includes such a material in finely divided form. Smallarms for firing the cartridge are also described. In Fig. 3 the pivoted breech block 21 of the Martini type is provided with a spring-loaded electrical contact 22 which contacts the head 5 in the base of the cartridge and is connected to a fixed contact 25. An elongation 27 of a tumbler 28 carries a movable contact 26 and is so shaped that the mechanism is cocked when breech block 21 is depressed by movement of cocking lever 29. Contact 26 is connected via switch 37 to the positive terminal of a battery 31 and the negative terminal is connected to the framework at 32 which establishes contact with the bullet of the cartridge via a lead to the barrel rifling. A rifle (Fig. 4, not shown) and a dropdown action piston (Fig. 5, not shown) have similar electrical systems, the contact which connects with head 5 being on a non-rotatable bolt in the case of the rifle.
