Abstract

982,908. Mass separators. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Aug. 2, 1963 [Sept. 4, 1962], No. 30,699/63. Heading E1D. An electrostatic charged particle beam separator for separating particles having different masses in a constant momentum beam, or different velocities in a constant mass beam, includes a pair of spaced parallel electrodes extending in the direction of movement of the particles and between which the deflecting field is applied, each electrode being divided into a number of geometrically spaced elements such as to lower the Q factor of the circuit formed by the electrodes, whereby to reduce the tendency for intermittent sparking between the electrodes to lead to continuous arcing. The electrodes 4, 5, Fig. 1, mounted within metal cylinder 3 through which passes the beam 2 from a particle accelerator 1, each have the form of a delay line structure, e.g. of ladder (Fig. 3, not shown), opposed comb, Fig. 4, or interdigital (Fig. 5, not shown) form, the rungs, teeth, or fingers of which may be mechanically separated from the longitudinal side bars 14, 15 but connected thereto by damping resistances (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). The separator may also include a crossed magnetic deflecting field.
