In a circular knitting machine of the cylinder and dial type selective shogging of needles in one bed is produced by the lateral deflection of each of said needles from one side to the opposite side of an adjacent needle in the other bed without relative turning movement of the beds to the circumferential extent of one complete needle space. In one modification (Fig. 1) spaced spin gears 8, 9 are provided in which teeth of the gear 8 are offset circumferentially with respect to the teeth on wheel 9. Rotation of the gears produces a deflection of the needle head which return to their original position when they have passed by the gears unless held by holding bits 12 in the verse 3b. The needles are reduced in thickness to facilitate the operation of the gears. The spun gear axle may be held on a bracket (not shown) which may be pivoted to allow the gears to move into an engagement position with the needles. In a further modification (Figs. 7 and 8) the needle tricks are offset with respect to the tricks 14a on the dial and the verge 15 is recessed at 16 and houses individually yieldable elements 16 with operable portions 17a which moves into a needle returning position when the needle is advanced and deflected. The operable portion 17a is uncovered by the sideways movement of the needle stem and it moves out to contact the adjacent side of the needle stem and hold it in the deflected condition. The stem is recessed at 2d so that the operable portion 17a is returned to its inoperative position when the needle is retracted. The rebated verge 15 may be tricked to guide the portion 17a and the verge may be made integral with or separate from the cylinder 3 and have bits 20 fixed therein. The needle retaining elements 17 are made of flattened piano wire. In a further modification (not shown) the needles may be deflected by wiping past a relatively stationary deflector cam. Alternatively the invention may be applied to the dial. The needle beds may be partly shogged before or after the deflection of the needles to place them in a better knitting position.
