A watch has a central seconds hand whose arbor 10 carries a pinion 9 forming an intermediate link in a chain of wheels linking the barrel 1 with the escapement 12,13, and this pinion meshes with two wheels 7, 8 neither of which overlaps the barrel. As shown, the barrel wheel engages a centre wheel 2 which is free on the arbor 10 and which meshes with an intermediate wheel 3. This intermediate wheel is geared to the seconds hand pinion 9 through a double step-up train compressing a first pinion-and-wheel 4, 5 driving a pinion 6 which is fact with the wheel 7 in mesh with the seconds hand pinion 9. The drive to the escapement 12,13 continues from pinion 9 through the wheel 8 which is coaxial with wheel 7 but which could rotate relative to wheel 7 if both these wheels did not engage the seconds hand pinion. Hand setting wheels, not shown, are connected with an hour train 15,17.
