Abstract

981,907. I.C. engine cooling systems. J. C. TAYLOR, and OTTER CONTROLS Ltd. Dec. 4, 1963 [Dec. 4, 1962], No. 45831/62. Heading FIB. [Also in Division H2] The operation of a radiator cooling fan is controlled by a thermally actuated switch 1, Fig. 2 mounted in a water-tight container 19 in the cooling circuit, the switch having associated therewith a heater 16 and the arrangement being such that operation of the switch with rising cooling liquid temperature renders the fan effective and the heater 16 ineffective whereas operation of the switch in the opposite sense with falling temperature renders the fan ineffective and the heater effective. The switch, which is preferably mounted in the header tank of the radiator, is operated by a bi-metal plate 1 constructed as described in Specifications 657,434 and 903,807, the switch contacts 12, 13 closing at a predetermined temperature and opening at a temperature about 10‹C. higher. The heater 16 heats the inside of the casing 19 when the contacts 12, 13, are open to avoid a big lag in operation of the switch when the cooling liquid temperature rises. In the circuit of Fig. 5 the switch contacts 12, 13 are in the circuit of an electric motor M driving the cooling fan and the heater 16 is connected across the contacts so that when the switch closes to energize the fan the heater is short-circuited and when the switch opens to cut off the fan the heater 16 is energized. Alternatively the heater 16 may be in parallel with the motor 17 and its circuit closed by the switch when the motor circuit is opened. The switch may alternatively control the operation of an electric or electromagnetic clutch in the drive of the fan.
