Abstract

1419618 Liquid heaters J E BRAIN 8 March 1973 [10 Dec 1971] 57500/71 Heading F4A In a liquid heating apparatus, a casing 5 is provided with a liquid inlet 7 and a liquid outlet 8, the liquid passing through a tortuous passage 6 being heated by an electric heating element 12 when a movable magnet 10 operates a reed switch 18 mounted outside the liquid flowpath. In operation, liquid (e.g. water) flowing into the apparatus through inlet 7 lifts the movable magnet 10 to its upper position to contact a fixed magnet 10A and close the reed switch 18. As water flows along the passage 6 it flows over a triac 11 to cool the latter and then is heated by passage over the heating element 12. The heated water then passes over a thermistor 16 and lifts a movable magnet 13 towards a fixed magnet 13A to close a second reed switch 19 and connect a switching trigger circuit 20 which serves to supply a train of trigger pulses to the gate of the triac 11 to switch the latter on and supply current to the heater element 12. As the water temperature rises the thermistor 16 serves to vary the number of trigger pulses to the triac 11 and to reduce the current flow to the heater element 12. Control of a variable resistance 22 enables the temperature of the water to be heated to be maintained relatively constant. When the flow of water ceases, the magnets 10 and 13 fall to their lower positions and the reed switches 18 and 19 are opened thereby stopping the supply of trigger pulses to the triac 11 and the current supply to the heater element 12 is cut off. A thyristor or a silicone controlled rectifier may be used instead of the triac.
