Abstract

A heat resistant "super alloy" consisting by weight of a major part of Ni and/or Co is coated with a diffusion layer by heating to 1650-2100 DEG F. in a diffusion pack including Cr, Al and Si and a vaporizable halogen material as a carrier. The diffusion pack contains 15-50% Cr, 1-20% Al, 0.5-15% Si, a filler such as Al2O3 and a halogen source such as the iodide, fluoride or hydrogen fluoride of ammonia or chromous fluoride. The Cr, Al and Si content of the pack should be 5-60% by weight of pack and the coating which is 0.001-0.002 inch thick consists of 90% Al, 5% Cr, 5% Si. With a part of the halogen source as a fluoride the pack can be reused for several coating operations, the fluoride acting as a regenerator. The alloy to be coated is embedded in the dry pack, sealed in an iron retort and heated for 4-20 hours at 1650-2100 DEG F. An alloy suitable for the vanes of a gas turbine engine contains 55% Co, 24.5% Cr, 10.5% Ni, 7.5% W and 0.5% C. Other alloys treated are: 0.12% C, 19% Cr, 1% Fe, 4% Mo, 3% Al, 3% Ti and balance Ni; 0.5% C, 24.5% Cr, 10.5% Ni, 7.4% W, 55% Co and balance Fe; 0.1% C, 20% Cr, 10% Ni, 15% W, 50% Co and balance Fe. Specification 911,414 is referred to.
