981,059. Motor vehicle axle structures. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN. Oct. 28, 1963 [Nov. 17, 1962], No. 42410/63. Headings B7D and B7H. A driving axle assembly for an agricultural vehicle or machine comprises a change-speed and differential gear-box 17 mounted below an axle casing 10 joining two gear casings 11, 12 each containing a wheel stub axle concentric with casing 10 and driven through a three-shaft gear train and a half-shaft 15, 16 from the gear housing 17. The gear-box is driven through a clutch 37 and belt drive 35. To accommodate flexure of the axle assembly the outer end of each half-shaft has a pin 27 journalled in the end of input shaft 38 and external splines on which is mounted a coupling flange 28 with dogs 30 engaging dogs 26 of brake drum 24 which is splined to input shaft 38. The external splines on shaft 38 and the half-shaft have the same profile to facilitate brake maintenance and a three-shaft gear train is used in each gear casing 11, 12 to reduce the leads on the casing due to the meshing gearteeth.
