Abstract

<PICT:0981025/C1/1> The alkalies are removed from cement raw material prior to kilning by passing the exhaust gases from rotary kiln 1 one or more times through a bed of raw material on travelling grate preheater 4, removing the dusts from the gases after the or each passage through the bed by means of separators 6 and 10, mixing the dusts with water in tank 13 to form a suspension, allowing the suspension to settle in tank 17 to form a strong alkali brine and an alkali poor sludge which is pumped to a granulating pan 21 where it is used to granulate fresh material to be kilned. The brine may be passed from tank 17 to a tank 26 containing a stirrer with a hollow shaft 27 through which kiln exhaust gases are passed to neutralize the brine which is then discharged via 30.
