Abstract

980,669. Seaming. AMERICAN LIGHT GAGE DRUM CORPORATION. July 26, 1963, No. 29798/63. Heading B3J. [Also in Division B8] A metal drum comprises a cyliridricaly shell 1 with end flanges, and head members 5 having wider flanges than those of the shell, the flanges being bonded together by welding, brazing, soldering or cementing at a location 14 intermediate the edges 15, 16 and angle portions 12, 13 of the flanges and formed into a tubular chime with the weld 14 near the middle of the outer portion of the chime, the edge 15 of the shell flange extending inwardly near one end 19 of the chime, and the edge 16 of the lead flange extending outwardly near the central portion of the chime. The radius of the angle portion 13 of the head flange is smaller than the radius of the angle portion 12 of the shell flange so that the metal surfaces will fit snugly when the chime is formed. Each chime is formed in two successive curling operations by grooved curling wheels 20, 23, the first operation forming the edge 16 of the head flange into a tube with its end adjacent the weld 14, and the second operation completing the chime.
