Abstract

1,191,564. Making cans. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 21 May, 1968 [25 May, 1967], No. 24205/68. Heading B3A. A welded or soldered seam can body 10 is notched 14 or weakened on each side of the seam at at least one end of the body to facilitate flanging. The notching 14 is performed by a punch (18), Fig. 5 (not shown), outside of the marginal area 17 from which the can coating has been removed by abrading. The notch preferably has a constant curvature although the part (22) remote from the seam, Fig. 6 (not shown, may have a larger radius or be straight. Alternatively the notch may be U-shaped with a central straight portion and curved ends. Instead of notching the body may have a score line (24), Fig. 7 (not shown), which weakens the edge of the body and may tear when the body is flanged. The seam is preferably formed by roller electrodes which also serve to reduce the wall thickness and soften the can body adjacent the seam.
