Abstract

980,210. Protective arrangements for cathoderay tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 5, 1962 [Oct. 9,. 1961], No. 37801/62. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H4] To prevent burning of the screen of a cathoderay tube by the electron beam when the tube is switched off, the first anode is comprised of two mutually-insulated parts 6a, 6b connected respectively to a circuit including a capacitor 27 and voltage divider 28, 29, and to a circuit including a potentiometer 32 and resistors 30, 31, the discharge time-constant of the latter circuit being less than that of the former. Thus when the tube is switched off the voltage of part 6b decreases more rapidly than that of part 6a to cause deflection of the electron beam in the direction II, where it impinges on the part 7 of the second anode to discharge this part, the part 8 and a conductive coating 11 connected to the screen, before the deflection due to the voltage difference between parts 6a, 6b has decreased to zero. Adjustment of potentiometer 32 to make the voltage of part 6b equal to that of part 6a produces a beam direction I during tube operation, the positive voltage for the parts 6a, 6b being supplied from the horizontal deflection circuit through its efficiency diode circuit and a potentiometer, Fig. 1 (not shown). Fig. 3 shows a simplified arrangement in which upon switching off, the voltage of anode part 6d decreases more rapidly than that of part 6 c so that, since part 6d has a small aperture, the electron beam is suppressed completely (although in this case parts 7, 8, 11 are not discharged). During tube operation the voltage of parts 6c, 6d will always become equal. The circuit arrangements and tube constructions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 may be interchanged. The supply and control circuits for the tube are described, Fig. 1 (not shown), and typical values are given for their resistors and capacitors and for those shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
