Abstract

979,238. Medical suction devices. THERATRONIC CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 13, 1963, No. 44865/63. Heading A5R. A device for applying suction to the eyeballs, comprises suction cups 10, 11 arranged to fit the limbal area of the eyeballs, suction chambers 12, 13 connected to cups 10, 11, vacuum chamber 17 connected to the chambers 12, 13, and having pressure gauge 18 and air-bleed valve 19, and a device for producing a vacuum comprising piston 22 slidable in cylinder 23. The apparatus may be enclosed in a box. In operation, valves 14, 15, 19, 20 are closed and valve 21 is opened. Piston 22 is retracted in cylinder 23 causing a vacuum to exist in the conduit between valve 20 and cylinder 23. Valve 21 is closed, valve 20 is opened to reduce the pressure in vacuum chamber 17 and valve 20 is closed. The suction cups 10, 11 are placed on the eyeballs and valves 14, 15 are opened, thus applying a suction to the eyeballs. If the suction becomes too great or it is desired to remove the cups 10, 11 from the eyes, bleed valve 19 is opened to the atmosphere.
