Abstract

668,469. Coil springs. VRIES. A. DE, and VRIES, L. DE. Jan. 20. 1949. No. 1666/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 108(iii) The method of manufacturing a flattened helical spring comprises the steps of first manufacturing a helical spring of normal form, and whose coils lie one against the other under an initial bias amounting to at least 50 per cent of the tensile force which does not extend an unbiassed spring spring of the same dimensions beyond its elastic limit and whose wire thickness is less than '/n of the mean coil diameter distance between the opposite crosssectional centres of the spring coils, where n is 10 if the bias amounts to 50 per cent of the tensile force or is less than 10 if the bias is greater than 50 per cent and then subjecting the spring to an axial tension such that the coils turn over in such a way that each turned-over coil overlaps at least one other coil. The initial bias may be provided by twisting one end of the unbiassed helical spring, to be of smaller diameter, drawing the twisted end through the spring which is itself twisted to become smaller as it passes through the unbiassed portion. U.S.A. Specification 2,495,212 is referred to.
